New blood donors are needed

The goal of the Friendship Campaign is to increase the number of new blood donors, as currently, only about 3% of Finns donate blood each year. New blood donors are continuously needed because some donors have to stop donating blood due to reasons such as illness. We need about 20,000 new blood donors annually to maintain a sufficient and diverse donor pool to meet patients’ treatment needs in Finland.

Every weekday, we need around 700 donors to ensure the availability of blood products for patient care. The steady need for blood is further emphasized by the fact that blood products do not have a long shelf life. Donated blood is vital for accident victims, premature babies, and cancer patients, for example.
