Can I join the Registry to donate for a specific patient?

A member of the Stem Cell Registry must be prepared to help any patient in need of a stem cell transplant, whether in Finland or abroad. When friends or family need a stem cell transplant, people often want to volunteer to donate their stem cells to that person. However, you cannot join the Stem Cell Registry with the purpose of donating to only a specific patient. The process of joining the Stem Cell Registry takes approximately 2–3 months. The first resort is always to assess whether a family member of the patient is a suitable donor. Which family members are assessed is decided by the patient’s hospital.
